Alexa and Raspberry Pi demo

We’re keeping on playing with Alexa. This time I want to create one skill that uses a compatible device (for example one Raspberry Pi 3). Here you can see the documentation and examples that the people of Alexa provides us. Basically we need to create a new Product/Alexa gadget in the console. It gives us one amazonId and alexaGadgetSecret.

Then we need to install the SDK in our Raspberry Pi (it install several python libraries). The we can create our gadget script running on our Raspberry Pi, using the amazonId and alexaGadgetSecret. We can listen to several Alexa events. For example: When we say the wakeword, with a timer, an alarm and also we can create our custom events.

I’m going to create one skill that allows me to say something like: “Alexa, use device demo and set color to green” or “Alexa, use device demo and set color to red” and I’ll put this color in the led matrix that I’ve got (one Raspberry Pi Sense Hat)

This is the python script:

import logging
import sys
import json
from agt import AlexaGadget
from sense_hat import SenseHat

logging.basicConfig(stream=sys.stdout, level=logging.DEBUG)
logger = logging.getLogger(__name__)

sense = SenseHat()
sense.clear()

RED = [255, 0, 0]
GREEN = [0, 255, 0]
BLUE = [0, 0, 255]
YELLOW = [255, 255, 0]
BLACK = [0, 0, 0]

class Gadget(AlexaGadget):
    def on_alexa_gadget_statelistener_stateupdate(self, directive):
        for state in directive.payload.states:
            if state.name == 'wakeword':
                sense.clear()
                if state.value == 'active':
                    sense.show_message("Alexa", text_colour=BLUE)

    def set_color_to(self, color):
        sense.set_pixels(([color] * 64))

    def on_custom_gonzalo123_setcolor(self, directive):
        payload = json.loads(directive.payload.decode("utf-8"))
        color = payload['color']

        if color == 'red':
            logger.info('turn on RED display')
            self.set_color_to(RED)

        if color == 'green':
            logger.info('turn on GREEN display')
            self.set_color_to(GREEN)

        if color == 'yellow':
            logger.info('turn on YELLOW display')
            self.set_color_to(YELLOW)

        if color == 'black':
            logger.info('turn on YELLOW display')
            self.set_color_to(BLACK)

if __name__ == '__main__':
    Gadget().main()

And here the ini file of our gadget

[GadgetSettings]
amazonId = my_amazonId
alexaGadgetSecret = my_alexaGadgetSecret

[GadgetCapabilities]
Alexa.Gadget.StateListener = 1.0 - wakeword
Custom.gonzalo123 = 1.0

Whit this ini file I’m saying that my gadget will trigger a function when wakeword has been said and with my custom event “Custom.gonzalo123”

That’s the skill:

const Alexa = require('ask-sdk')

const RequestInterceptor = require('./interceptors/RequestInterceptor')
const ResponseInterceptor = require('./interceptors/ResponseInterceptor')
const LocalizationInterceptor = require('./interceptors/LocalizationInterceptor')
const GadgetInterceptor = require('./interceptors/GadgetInterceptor')

const LaunchRequestHandler = require('./handlers/LaunchRequestHandler')
const ColorHandler = require('./handlers/ColorHandler')
const HelpIntentHandler = require('./handlers/HelpIntentHandler')
const CancelAndStopIntentHandler = require('./handlers/CancelAndStopIntentHandler')
const SessionEndedRequestHandler = require('./handlers/SessionEndedRequestHandler')
const FallbackHandler = require('./handlers/FallbackHandler')
const ErrorHandler = require('./handlers/ErrorHandler')

let skill

module.exports.handler = async (event, context) => {
  if (!skill) {
    skill = Alexa.SkillBuilders.custom().
      addRequestInterceptors(
        RequestInterceptor,
        ResponseInterceptor,
        LocalizationInterceptor,
        GadgetInterceptor
      ).
      addRequestHandlers(
        LaunchRequestHandler,
        ColorHandler,
        HelpIntentHandler,
        CancelAndStopIntentHandler,
        SessionEndedRequestHandler,
        FallbackHandler).
      addErrorHandlers(
        ErrorHandler).
      create()
  }

  return await skill.invoke(event, context)
}

One important thing here is the GadgetInterceptor. This interceptor find the endpointId from the request and append it to the session. This endpoint exists because we’ve created our Product/Alexa gadget and also the python script is running on the device. If the endpoint isn’t present maybe our skill must say to the user something like “No gadgets found. Please try again after connecting your gadget.”.

const utils = require('../lib/utils')

const GadgetInterceptor = {
  async process (handlerInput) {
    const endpointId = await utils.getEndpointIdFromConnectedEndpoints(handlerInput)
    if (endpointId) {
      utils.appendToSession(handlerInput, 'endpointId', endpointId)
    }
  }
}

module.exports = GadgetInterceptor

And finally the handlers to trigger the custom event:

const log = require('../lib/log')
const utils = require('../lib/utils')

const buildLEDDirective = (endpointId, color) => {
  return {
    type: 'CustomInterfaceController.SendDirective',
    header: {
      name: 'setColor',
      namespace: 'Custom.gonzalo123'
    },
    endpoint: {
      endpointId: endpointId
    },
    payload: {
      color: color
    }
  }
}

const ColorHandler = {
  canHandle (handlerInput) {
    return handlerInput.requestEnvelope.request.type === 'IntentRequest'
      && handlerInput.requestEnvelope.request.intent.name === 'ColorIntent'
  },
  handle (handlerInput) {
    const requestAttributes = handlerInput.attributesManager.getRequestAttributes()
    const cardTitle = requestAttributes.t('SKILL_NAME')

    const endpointId = utils.getEndpointIdFromSession(handlerInput)
    if (!endpointId) {
      log.error('endpoint', error)
      return handlerInput.responseBuilder.
        speak(error).
        getResponse()
    }

    const color = handlerInput.requestEnvelope.request.intent.slots['color'].value
    log.info('color', color)
    log.info('endpointId', endpointId)

    return handlerInput.responseBuilder.
      speak(`Ok. The selected color is ${color}`).
      withSimpleCard(cardTitle, color).
      addDirective(buildLEDDirective(endpointId, color)).
      getResponse()
  }
}

module.exports = ColorHandler

Here one video with the working example:

Source code in my github

Playing with RabbitMQ, PHP and node

I need to use RabbitMQ in one project. I’m a big fan of Gearman, but I must admit Rabbit is much more powerful. In this project I need to handle with PHP code and node, so I want to build a wrapper for those two languages. I don’t want to re-invent the wheel so I will use existing libraries (php-amqplib and amqplib for node).

Basically I need to use three things: First I need to create exchange channels to log different actions. I need to decouple those actions from the main code. I also need to create work queues to ensure those works are executed. It doesn’t matter if work is executed later but it must be executed. And finally RPC commands.

Let’s start with the queues. I want to push events to a queue in PHP

use G\Rabbit\Builder;
$server = [
    'host' => 'localhost',
    'port' => 5672,
    'user' => 'guest',
    'pass' => 'guest',
];
$queue = Builder::queue('queue.backend', $server);
$queue->emit(["aaa" => 1]);

and also with node

var server = {
    host: 'localhost',
    port: 5672,
    user: 'guest',
    pass: 'guest'
};

var queue = builder.queue('queue.backend', server);
queue.emit({aaa: 1});

And I also want to register workers to those queues with PHP and node

use G\Rabbit\Builder;
$server = [
    'host' => 'localhost',
    'port' => 5672,
    'user' => 'guest',
    'pass' => 'guest',
];
Builder::queue('queue.backend', $server)->receive(function ($data) {
    error_log(json_encode($data));
});
var server = {
    host: 'localhost',
    port: 5672,
    user: 'guest',
    pass: 'guest'
};

var queue = builder.queue('queue.backend', server);
queue.receive(function (data) {
    console.log(data);
});

Both implementations use one builder. In this case we are using Queue:

namespace G\Rabbit;
use PhpAmqpLib\Connection\AMQPStreamConnection;
use PhpAmqpLib\Message\AMQPMessage;
class Queue
{
    private $name;
    private $conf;
    public function __construct($name, $conf)
    {
        $this->name = $name;
        $this->conf = $conf;
    }
    private function createConnection()
    {
        $server = $this->conf['server'];
        return new AMQPStreamConnection($server['host'], $server['port'], $server['user'], $server['pass']);
    }
    private function declareQueue($channel)
    {
        $conf = $this->conf['queue'];
        $channel->queue_declare($this->name, $conf['passive'], $conf['durable'], $conf['exclusive'],
            $conf['auto_delete'], $conf['nowait']);
    }
    public function emit($data = null)
    {
        $connection = $this->createConnection();
        $channel = $connection->channel();
        $this->declareQueue($channel);
        $msg = new AMQPMessage(json_encode($data),
            ['delivery_mode' => 2] # make message persistent
        );
        $channel->basic_publish($msg, '', $this->name);
        $channel->close();
        $connection->close();
    }
    public function receive(callable $callback)
    {
        $connection = $this->createConnection();
        $channel = $connection->channel();
        $this->declareQueue($channel);
        $consumer = $this->conf['consumer'];
        if ($consumer['no_ack'] === false) {
            $channel->basic_qos(null, 1, null);
        }
        $channel->basic_consume($this->name, '', $consumer['no_local'], $consumer['no_ack'], $consumer['exclusive'],
            $consumer['nowait'],
            function ($msg) use ($callback) {
                call_user_func($callback, json_decode($msg->body, true), $this->name);
                $msg->delivery_info['channel']->basic_ack($msg->delivery_info['delivery_tag']);
                $now = new \DateTime();
                echo '['.$now->format('d/m/Y H:i:s')."] {$this->name}::".$msg->body, "\n";
            });
        $now = new \DateTime();
        echo '['.$now->format('d/m/Y H:i:s')."] Queue '{$this->name}' initialized \n";
        while (count($channel->callbacks)) {
            $channel->wait();
        }
        $channel->close();
        $connection->close();
    }
}
var amqp = require('amqplib/callback_api');

var Queue = function (name, conf) {
    return {
        emit: function (data, close=true) {
            amqp.connect(`amqp://${conf.server.user}:${conf.server.pass}@${conf.server.host}:${conf.server.port}`, function (err, conn) {
                conn.createChannel(function (err, ch) {
                    var msg = JSON.stringify(data);

                    ch.assertQueue(name, conf.queue);
                    ch.sendToQueue(name, new Buffer(msg));
                });
                if (close) {
                    setTimeout(function () {
                        conn.close();
                        process.exit(0)
                    }, 500);
                }
            });
        },
        receive: function (callback) {
            amqp.connect(`amqp://${conf.server.user}:${conf.server.pass}@${conf.server.host}:${conf.server.port}`, function (err, conn) {
                conn.createChannel(function (err, ch) {
                    ch.assertQueue(name, conf.queue);
                    console.log(new Date().toString() + ' Queue ' + name + ' initialized');
                    ch.consume(name, function (msg) {
                        console.log(new Date().toString() + " Received %s", msg.content.toString());
                        if (callback) {
                            callback(JSON.parse(msg.content.toString()), msg.fields.routingKey)
                        }
                        if (conf.consumer.noAck === false) {
                            ch.ack(msg);
                        }
                    }, conf.consumer);
                });
            });
        }
    };
};

module.exports = Queue;

We also want to emit messages using an exchange

Emiter:

use G\Rabbit\Builder;
$server = [
    'host' => 'localhost',
    'port' => 5672,
    'user' => 'guest',
    'pass' => 'guest',
];
$exchange = Builder::exchange('process.log', $server);
$exchange->emit("xxx.log", "aaaa");
$exchange->emit("xxx.log", ["11", "aaaa"]);
$exchange->emit("yyy.log", "aaaa");
var builder = require('../../src/Builder');

var server = {
    host: 'localhost',
    port: 5672,
    user: 'guest',
    pass: 'guest'
};

var exchange = builder.exchange('process.log', server);

exchange.emit("xxx.log", "aaaa");
exchange.emit("xxx.log", ["11", "aaaa"]);
exchange.emit("yyy.log", "aaaa");

and receiver:

use G\Rabbit\Builder;
$server = [
    'host' => 'localhost',
    'port' => 5672,
    'user' => 'guest',
    'pass' => 'guest',
];
Builder::exchange('process.log', $server)->receive("yyy.log", function ($routingKey, $data) {
    error_log($routingKey." - ".json_encode($data));
});
var server = {
    host: 'localhost',
    port: 5672,
    user: 'guest',
    pass: 'guest'
};

var exchange = builder.exchange('process.log', server);

exchange.receive("yyy.log", function (routingKey, data) {
    console.log(routingKey, data);
});

And that’s the PHP implementation:

namespace G\Rabbit;
use PhpAmqpLib\Connection\AMQPStreamConnection;
use PhpAmqpLib\Message\AMQPMessage;
class Exchange
{
    private $name;
    private $conf;
    public function __construct($name, $conf)
    {
        $this->name = $name;
        $this->conf = $conf;
    }
    private function createConnection()
    {
        $server = $this->conf['server'];
        return new AMQPStreamConnection($server['host'], $server['port'], $server['user'], $server['pass']);
    }
    public function emit($routingKey, $data = null)
    {
        $connection = $this->createConnection();
        $channel = $connection->channel();
        $conf = $this->conf['exchange'];
        $channel->exchange_declare($this->name, 'topic', $conf['passive'], $conf['durable'], $conf['auto_delete'],
            $conf['internal'], $conf['nowait']);
        $msg = new AMQPMessage(json_encode($data), [
            'delivery_mode' => 2, # make message persistent
        ]);
        $channel->basic_publish($msg, $this->name, $routingKey);
        $channel->close();
        $connection->close();
    }
    public function receive($bindingKey, callable $callback)
    {
        $connection = $this->createConnection();
        $channel = $connection->channel();
        $conf = $this->conf['exchange'];
        $channel->exchange_declare($this->name, 'topic', $conf['passive'], $conf['durable'], $conf['auto_delete'],
            $conf['internal'], $conf['nowait']);
        $queueConf = $this->conf['queue'];
        list($queue_name, ,) = $channel->queue_declare("", $queueConf['passive'], $queueConf['durable'],
            $queueConf['exclusive'], $queueConf['auto_delete'], $queueConf['nowait']);
        $channel->queue_bind($queue_name, $this->name, $bindingKey);
        $consumerConf = $this->conf['consumer'];
        $channel->basic_consume($queue_name, '', $consumerConf['no_local'], $consumerConf['no_ack'],
            $consumerConf['exclusive'], $consumerConf['nowait'],
            function ($msg) use ($callback) {
                call_user_func($callback, $msg->delivery_info['routing_key'], json_decode($msg->body, true));
                $now = new \DateTime();
                echo '['.$now->format('d/m/Y H:i:s').'] '.$this->name.':'.$msg->delivery_info['routing_key'].'::', $msg->body, "\n";
                $msg->delivery_info['channel']->basic_ack($msg->delivery_info['delivery_tag']);
            });
        $now = new \DateTime();
        echo '['.$now->format('d/m/Y H:i:s')."] Exchange '{$this->name}' initialized \n";
        while (count($channel->callbacks)) {
            $channel->wait();
        }
        $channel->close();
        $connection->close();
    }
}

And node:

var amqp = require('amqplib/callback_api');

var Exchange = function (name, conf) {
    return {
        emit: function (routingKey, data, close = true) {
            amqp.connect(`amqp://${conf.server.user}:${conf.server.pass}@${conf.server.host}:${conf.server.port}`, function (err, conn) {
                conn.createChannel(function (err, ch) {
                    var msg = JSON.stringify(data);
                    ch.assertExchange(name, 'topic', conf.exchange);
                    ch.publish(name, routingKey, new Buffer(msg));
                });
                if (close) {
                    setTimeout(function () {
                        conn.close();
                        process.exit(0)
                    }, 500);
                }
            });
        },
        receive: function (bindingKey, callback) {
            amqp.connect(`amqp://${conf.server.user}:${conf.server.pass}@${conf.server.host}:${conf.server.port}`, function (err, conn) {
                conn.createChannel(function (err, ch) {
                    ch.assertExchange(name, 'topic', conf.exchange);
                    console.log(new Date().toString() + ' Exchange ' + name + ' initialized');
                    ch.assertQueue('', conf.queue, function (err, q) {

                        ch.bindQueue(q.queue, name, bindingKey);

                        ch.consume(q.queue, function (msg) {
                            console.log(new Date().toString(), name, ":", msg.fields.routingKey, "::", msg.content.toString());
                            if (callback) {
                                callback(msg.fields.routingKey, JSON.parse(msg.content.toString()))
                            }
                            if (conf.consumer.noAck === false) {
                                ch.ack(msg);
                            }
                        }, conf.consumer);
                    });
                });
            });
        }
    };
};

module.exports = Exchange;

Finally we want to use RPC commands. In fact RPC implementations is similar than Queue but in this case client will receive an answer.

Client side

use G\Rabbit\Builder;
$server = [
    'host' => 'localhost',
    'port' => 5672,
    'user' => 'guest',
    'pass' => 'guest',
];
echo Builder::rpc('rpc.hello', $server)->call("Gonzalo", "Ayuso");
var builder = require('../../src/Builder');

var server = {
    host: 'localhost',
    port: 5672,
    user: 'guest',
    pass: 'guest'
};

var rpc = builder.rpc('rpc.hello', server);
rpc.call("Gonzalo", "Ayuso", function (data) {
    console.log(data);
});

Server side:

use G\Rabbit\Builder;
$server = [
    'host' => 'localhost',
    'port' => 5672,
    'user' => 'guest',
    'pass' => 'guest',
];
Builder::rpc('rpc.hello', $server)->server(function ($name, $surname) use ($server) {
    return "Hello {$name} {$surname}";
});
var builder = require('../../src/Builder');

var server = {
    host: 'localhost',
    port: 5672,
    user: 'guest',
    pass: 'guest'
};

var rpc = builder.rpc('rpc.hello', server);

rpc.server(function (name, surname) {
    return "Hello " + name + " " + surname;
});

And Implementations:

namespace G\Rabbit;
use PhpAmqpLib\Connection\AMQPStreamConnection;
use PhpAmqpLib\Message\AMQPMessage;
class RPC
{
    private $name;
    private $conf;
    public function __construct($name, $conf)
    {
        $this->name = $name;
        $this->conf = $conf;
    }
    private function createConnection()
    {
        $server = $this->conf['server'];

Using OpenUI5 table and Angularjs

Last days I’ve been playing with OpenUI5. OpenUI5 is a web toolkit that SAP people has released as an open source project. I’ve read several good reviews about this framework, and because of that I started to hack a little bit with it. OpenUI5 came with a very complete set of controls. In this small example I want to use the “table” control. It’s just a datagrid. This days I playing a lot with Angular.js so I wanted to use together OpenUI5’s table control and Angularjs.

I’m not quite sure if it’s a good decision to use together both frameworks. In fact we don’t need Angular.js to create web applications using OpenUI5. OpenUI5 uses internally jQuery, but I wanted to hack a little bit and create one Angularjs directive to enclose one OpenUI5 datagrid.

First of all, we create one index.html. It’s just a boilerplate with angular + ui-router + ui-bootstrap. We also start our OpenUi5 environment with de default theme and including the table library

<!doctype html>
<html ng-app="G">
<head>
    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">

    <link rel="stylesheet" href="assets/bootstrap/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css">

    <script src="assets/angular/angular.js"></script>
    <script src="assets/angular-ui-router/release/angular-ui-router.js"></script>
    <script src="assets/angular-bootstrap/ui-bootstrap-tpls.js"></script>

    <script id='sap-ui-bootstrap' type='text/javascript'
            src="https://openui5.hana.ondemand.com/resources/sap-ui-core.js"
            data-sap-ui-theme='sap_bluecrystal'
            data-sap-ui-libs='sap.ui.commons, sap.ui.table'></script>

    <script src="js/ngOpenUI5.js"></script>

    <script src="js/app.js"></script>
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/app.css">
</head>
<body class="ng-cloak">

<div class="container">

    <div class="starter-template">
        <div ui-view></div>
    </div>
</div>

<script src="assets/html5shiv/dist/html5shiv.js"></script>
<script src="assets/respond/dest/respond.src.js"></script>

</body>
</html>

Then we create a directive enclosing the OpenUI5 needed code within a Angular module

(function () {
    'use strict';

    angular.module('ng.openui5', [])
        .directive('openui5Table', function () {

            function renderColumns(columns, oTable) {
                for (var i = 0; i <= columns.length; i++) {
                    oTable.addColumn(new sap.ui.table.Column(columns[i]));
                }
            }

            var link = function (scope, element) {

                var oData = scope.model.data,
                    oTable = new sap.ui.table.Table(scope.model.conf),
                    oModel = new sap.ui.model.json.JSONModel();

                oModel.setData({modelData: oData});
                renderColumns(scope.model.columns, oTable);

                oTable.setModel(oModel);
                oTable.bindRows("/modelData");
                oTable.sort(oTable.getColumns()[0]);

                oTable.placeAt(element);

                scope.$watch('model.data', function (data) {
                    if (data) {
                        oModel.setData({modelData: data});
                        oModel.refresh();
                    }
                }, true);

            };

            return {
                restrict: 'E',
                scope: {model: '=ngModel'},
                link: link
            };
        });
}());

And now we can create a simple Angular.js using the ng.openui5 module. In this application we configure the table and fetch the data from an externar API server

(function () {
    'use strict';

    angular.module('G', ['ui.bootstrap', 'ui.router', 'ng.openui5'])

        .value('config', {
            apiUrl: '/api'
        })

        .config(function ($stateProvider, $urlRouterProvider) {
            $urlRouterProvider.otherwise("/");
            $stateProvider
                .state('home', {
                    url: "/",
                    templateUrl: "partials/home.html",
                    controller: 'HomeController'
                });
        })

        .controller('HomeController', function ($scope, $http, $log, config) {
            $scope.refresh = function () {
                $http.get(config.apiUrl + '/gridData').success(function (data) {
                    $scope.datagrid.data = data;
                });
            };

            $scope.datagrid = {
                conf: {
                    title: "Table example",
                    navigationMode: sap.ui.table.NavigationMode.Paginator
                },
                columns: [
                    {
                        label: new sap.ui.commons.Label({text: "Last Name"}),
                        template: new sap.ui.commons.TextView().bindProperty("text", "lastName"),
